Dow launches VOLTRICELL materials platform for battery cell manufacturing
Summary
Dow has introduced VOLTRICELL, a suite of binders, dispersants, additives and fire-protection materials designed to optimize battery manufacturing and support emerging chemistries like sodium-ion, silicon-anode and solid-state batteries. The platform is Dow's first materials portfolio focused specifically on electrochemistry inside the cell, spanning electrode, separator, coating and packaging applications.
Dow has launched VOLTRICELL, a suite of materials designed to optimize battery manufacturing processes and improve the performance of existing batteries and emerging sodium-ion, silicon-anode and solid-state battery technologies.
Dow says VOLTRICELL is its first materials platform designed specifically to support electrochemistry inside the cell. The platform brings together Dow's battery cell materials and is designed to support electrode, separator, coating and battery cell packaging applications. The portfolio includes binders, dispersants, rheology modifiers, surfactants and specialty additives that can be selected and combined to help support performance, manufacturability and scalability.
Dow has also highlighted materials to support battery fire protection, including VORAFORCE TP1415 Polyol, a polyurethane resin system for manufacturing fiber-reinforced composites in pultrusion applications. The resin system is designed to support impact resistance, corrosion resistance and flame-retardant performance.
DOWSIL EF-6559 Silicone Foam is a two-part expanding foam for narrow, complex shapes within battery assemblies. The foam forms a protective ceramic layer when exposed to high heat and is designed to support thermal management and electrical insulation in series production.
DOWSIL FC-2024 Coating is a one-part room-temperature-vulcanizing (RTV) coating for battery housings, enclosures and lids that forms a hard protective ceramic layer during a thermal event. The coating is intended for cylindrical, prismatic or pouch-based battery systems.
"In the battery industry, there are a multitude of chemistries and cell manufacturing strategies in play today and under development for the future," said Joel McDonald, Global Technical Director for Dow MobilityScience. "Battery manufacturers need materials partners that can evolve with their technology roadmaps. Through VOLTRICELL, we can help customers innovate with confidence, leveraging Dow's broad toolbox to support today's cell chemistries and the next generation of energy storage."
