JUNA Deploys 110 Scania Electric Semi Trucks Across European Freight Routes

You-know-who might be grabbing headlines by rolling a few trucks off the assembly line, but fleets overseas have been putting electric semi trucks to work for years – and shipping fleet JUNA just announced the deployment of its 110th (!) big BEV.

A joint venture between German logistics firm sennder and Swedish truck brand Scania, JUNA works with shippers and freight forwarders to understand their transport needs, identify suitable routes, integrate electric vehicles where possible, then support those carriers with a flexible pay-per-use model that enables them to decarbonize some or all of their freight traffic today, without taking on the higher up-front cost of trucks and charging.

“When we set out to build JUNA with sennder, our goal was to show that electric trucks could work commercially for carriers while helping shippers decarbonize the transport networks they rely on,” says Gustaf Sundell, Executive Vice President and Head of Ventures and New Business at Scania Group. “Reaching 100 trucks across four markets shows that this proof point is real and gives us a strong foundation for continued growth.”

Since deploying its first electric semi trucks two years ago, JUNA’s Scania fleet has travelled more than 3.9 million emissions-free kilometers (~2.5 million miles), or about 100 trips around the equator. JUNA routes include international transport across Germany, Italy, Poland, and the Netherlands, and the company plans to add as many as 40 more electric semi trucks before the end of the year.

The truck, itself

Scania’s R45 electric truck packs a 450 kW (~605 hp) electric powertrain that’s more than up to the task of hauling up to 40 tonnes (~88,000 lbs.) of sennder-booked freight freight up to 350 km (~215 miles) on each charge of its 624 kWh battery pack. A bigger, badder, three-motor + six-speed setup with multiple drive is available with a 64 tonne (~141,000 lb.) rating.

Once its battery is spent, the big Scania can plug in to 375 kW DC fast charging and get back 80% of its range in about an hour.
