Vishay's new automotive-grade chokes cut DCR, shrink size to replace toroidal EMI filters
Summary
Vishay Intertechnology introduced four AEC-Q200 qualified surface-mount common-mode chokes for DC/DC converters and in-vehicle networks, offering DCR as low as 0.4 mΩ—far lower than typical 23 mΩ toroidal parts—to reduce conduction losses. The compact 1210/1812 and 5050/6050 cases support currents up to 14 A and save significant board space in electric and hybrid vehicle power systems.
Vishay Intertechnology has expanded its portfolio of automotive-grade common-mode chokes with four surface-mount devices that offer DC resistance (DCR) as low as 0.4 mΩ in 1210 and 1812 case sizes. Vishay lists the Vishay Dale ICM5050-A, ICM6050-A, IFLN-1210BE-A and IFLN-1812CZ-A as AEC-Q200 qualified, and intends them for noise suppression and filtering in DC/DC power supplies, in-vehicle Ethernet networks, LCD displays, lighting drivers and battery-powered devices.
The four chokes offer maximum DCR from 0.4 mΩ to 12 mΩ. Vishay says toroidal common mode chokes typically provide DCR of 23 mΩ, so the lower resistance reduces conduction losses in the circuit.
The ICM5050-A and ICM6050-A are wirewound ferrite chokes rated for currents up to 11 A in the 5050 case and 14 A in the 6050 case. Their footprints of 12.0 mm x 11.0 mm x 6.0 mm and 15.0 mm x 13.0 mm x 6.0 mm are smaller than the toroidal chokes they can replace, which the company puts at 19 mm x 30 mm x 28 mm.
The IFLN-1210BE-A and IFLN-1812CZ-A are ferrite chokes with precision winding that provide common mode impedance up to 11 kΩ at 100 MHz in the 1210 and 1812 case sizes. Both are rated for operation from -55° C to 150° C, and their inductance ranges from 11 µH to 100 µH. The company rates the IFLN-1210BE-A at 0.150 A to 0.300 A and the IFLN-1812CZ-A at 0.200 A to 0.360 A. Vishay intends them for EMI suppression in CAN, LAN and automotive DC/DC converters.
Vishay describes all four as RoHS-compliant, halogen-free and compatible with reflow soldering and automated pick-and-place assembly.
Samples and production quantities are available, and Vishay lists lead times of 10 to 12 weeks.
