FedEx Orders 2,000 All-Electric Delivery Vans from Harbinger in $300M+ Deal
Summary
FedEx has placed an order for 2,000 medium-duty all-electric delivery vans from US electric truck maker Harbinger, with the deal valued at over US$300 million. Each van is expected to save about US$20,000 in annual fuel costs, supporting FedEx's fleet electrification and emissions-reduction goals through 2027.
In a further sign of the economics and environmental benefits lining up to push businesses into electrifying their fleets, the US logistics giant FedEx have just placed an order for 2,000 medium duty all-electric delivery vans from US electric truck manufacturer, Harbinger.
The total order value exceeds US$300 million ($A430 million), with all 2000 vehicles planned for delivery by the end of 2027, for deployment across FedEx pickup and delivery operations in the US and Canada.
Harbinger’s vehicles will serve as one-for-one replacements for conventional vehicles, supporting FedEx’s efforts to reduce emissions and modernize its fleet. The order includes a mix of models from Harbinger’s all-electric vehicle lineup.
According to Vinay D’Souza (Senior Vice President of Global Assets and Infrastructure, FedEx):
“The transportation industry is undergoing a fundamental transformation, and electrification is set to play a pivotal role in the future of commercial fleets. This order with Harbinger helps us advance that transition, allowing us to build a more modern, efficient, and intelligent fleet that meets the evolving needs of our customers, our team members, and our global operations.”
Harbinger estimates that each of its electric trucks reduce fuel costs by an average of US$20,000 (Au$28,000) annually, compared with the conventional diesel vehicle it replaces.
(It is worth noting here that US diesel prices are currently hovering around US$6.30 per US gallon, or $A2.38 a litre. Given Australian diesel prices are currently averaging around $2.83 a litre, that saving is only going to be larger for an Australian business).
Harbinger’s vehicles are designed and engineered for a service life of 20 years, to match the typical life of class 5 and 6 medium duty trucks. (US Class 5 and 6 trucks in Australian terms are rigid trucks of roughly 7-9t and 9-12t respectively).
As a result, Harbinger estimates that 2,000 vehicles, deployed into a single fleet operating in North America, can generate approximately US$40 million in annual fuel savings, or US$800 million over a typical 20 year vehicle life.
In addition, based on current published data from the US Department of Energy, Harbinger estimates that replacing 2,000 diesel trucks with Harbinger electric trucks will avoid more than 1.7 million tons of CO2 emissions over their operating lives.
