Porsche launches wireless inductive EV charging on Cayenne Electric SUV

Buried in a press release titled, “Even more colours and even greater convenience for the Cayenne Electric” was news that Porsche, for the first time, would be offering electrically wireless inductive charging on its impressively powerful Cayenne Electric SUV.

With the launch of Porsche Wireless Charging in its latest Cayenne Electric SUV, Porsche is introducing a particularly convenient form of EV charging that makes living with its most powerful car EVER even simpler than before: instead of connecting a cable, Cayenne drivers just have to park their portly P-car over a strategically placed pad, and the charging process then begins automatically.

The Porsche Wireless Charging system pairs a charging pad on the underside of the Cayenne with a ground pad installed in the customer’s parking space. Porsche calls the latter “weatherproof” for outdoor installation, and claims a charging rate of up to 11 kW and with an efficiency of about 90% for easy overnight charging.

Integrated safety mechanisms like motion sensors and cat foreign object detection are baked in to avoid microwaving the cat ensure safe operation, designed to stop the charging process automatically if, “a living creature comes close to the vehicle or the ground pad or if a metallic object lies on the latter and heats up.”

Porsche Wireless Charging is being rolled out globally in stages, and is available to order now in Germany and other European markets.
