The Sierra Club released a legislative blueprint for the incoming Democratic-led Congress focused on affordability, polluter accountability, public lands preservation, and clean energy. The plan urges passage of a "make polluters pay" package, the Energy Bills Relief Act, and a windfall profits tax.

Washington, DC — As Democrats regain control of the US House of Representatives and the US Senate, the Sierra Club today released a new legislative policy blueprint for the incoming Congress that will deliver for the American people by addressing the affordability crisis, holding polluters accountable, preserving our public lands, and protecting public health and safety.

“Voters have sent a clear message that they reject Trump’s war on clean energy and the destructive and corrupt agenda of the administration and its allies in Congress. The people have spoken, and the new Congress should waste no time in responding by fighting to reverse the damage Trump has caused these past two years, and leading our country to a stronger, more resilient future,” said Sierra Club Legislative Director Melinda Pierce. “This blueprint guides the way to lower costs, stronger infrastructure, and healthier communities — all wildly popular goals that the new Congress must get serious in pursuing right away.”

While families struggle to make ends meet, Trump and his family, the oil and gas industry, and big utilities have reported record profits in recent months. To address this corruption, the Sierra Club urges the new Congress to prioritize passing a “make polluters pay” package, the Energy Bills Relief Act, and a windfall profits tax, alongside the extensive recommendations detailed in its policy blueprint.

Throughout the first two years of this Trump administration, Sierra Club lawyers launched a robust Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) accountability effort to help the American people see clearly the connections between the fossil fuel industry, its costly and dangerous agenda, and the policies of Trump’s Environmental Protection Agency, Department of the Interior, Department of Energy, and other agencies. Sierra Club plans to build on this progress and work with the new Democratic majority to advance affordable clean energy, protect special places, and hold the Trump administration and the fossil fuel industry accountable.
