Sierra Club Hails Midterm Wins, Urges Democrats to Act on Clean Energy and Climate

Democrats must seize on this opportunity to take ambitious action for the climate and our democracy.
Washington, DC — While votes are still being counted, election officials have called enough races that it’s clear that Democrats have retaken the US House of Representatives and are expected to retake the Senate.
Sierra Club-endorsed candidates including Annie Andrews (SC), Deb Haaland (NM), Keisha Lance Bottoms (GA), Manny Rutinel (CO), Gina Hinojosa (TX), and more won their races with commitments to fight for clean air, clean water, and a clean energy economy.
In response, Sierra Club Executive Director Loren Blackford released the following statement:
“Voters across the country have made a resounding call for new leadership that will prioritize healthy and affordable communities, uphold our democracy and constitutional rights, and hold polluters, utility companies, and the Trump administration accountable. This is a clear rejection of Donald Trump and Congressional Republicans’ war on affordable clean energy and their politics of corruption and corporate greed that have left Americans facing skyrocketing energy bills and polluted communities while fossil fuel CEOs reap the profits.
“Sierra Club members and supporters across the country organized, phonebanked, and knocked doors for these candidates up and down the ticket, and now we will work to make sure they seize on this opportunity to take ambitious action for the climate and our democracy. They must hold the Trump administration accountable for its corruption and unlawful attempts to sacrifice the health and safety of our communities, and invest in a clean energy future for all of us.”
