Tesla Investor Gary Black Predicts SpaceX Will Buy Tesla at $420/Share in Coming Weeks
Summary
Investor Gary Black and biographer Walter Isaacson suggest SpaceX could acquire Tesla in a stock deal announced before the EV maker's annual meeting. The speculation follows Tesla's Roadster event, which some see as a showcase for merging Musk's two largest companies.
There’s been a lot of chatter in recent days, weeks, and months about the possibility that SpaceX and Tesla will merge. Elon Musk has been a fan of merging, swallowing, and mushing together his companies. This has happened especially as Musk companies have needed saving. Tesla saved SolarCity, a company founded and run by Musk’s cousins that Musk was chairman of. xAI and X (formerly Twitter) were saved by SpaceX. Now there’s murmuring and expectation that Musk’s two biggest companies, SpaceX and Tesla, will merge — or one will swallow the other.
This has been a hot topic of conversation in the investment world since SpaceX went public, but chatter has gotten louder recently.
“A merger between Elon Musk’s Tesla Inc. and SpaceX could be announced ahead of the electric-vehicle maker’s annual general meeting, according to analysts at Barclays,” Bloomberg reported last week. Gary Black of The Future Fund, a well known investor in Tesla [TSLA] who has never been shy at criticizing Musk’s decisions or identifying potential risks and problems at Tesla, had the following to say about the not-so-impressive Roadster event last week:
“I agree with those who say the sole purpose of last night’s Roadster event was to make the case for a $SPCX-$TSLA merger. My guess: Announcement in next few weeks $SPCX buys $TSLA for $420/share in SPCX stock; deal could take a year to close.”
Walter Isaacson, who was given the opportunity to follow Musk around and write his biography, also saw the second-gen Roadster “almost a joint product” between SpaceX and Tesla, especially including “the way the thrusters and the rockets work.”
“I think it shows why eventually, and I would guess, Tesla and SpaceX are gonna merge,” he added.
But what’s the reason for merging the two companies? Is one expected to be in financial distress in coming months, stimulating the need for a bailout or merger? Not exactly. Is there some other strong reason for merging the two companies?
