Volkswagen ID. Tiguan to Go Electric in 2027, Replacing ID.4 and ID.5

Volkswagen is taking its best-seller electric. The ID. Tiguan will replace the ID.4 and ID.5 as part of Volkswagen’s revamped lineup in 2027.

When is Volkswagen launching the ID. Tiguan?

With more than 950,000 models sold since they went on sale in 2021, the ID.4 and ID.5 have been among Volkswagen’s best-selling electric vehicles.

As part of Volkswagen’s revamped lineup, the ID.4 and ID.5 are next in line for an overhaul that brings more than just a new name.

Following the ID. Polo and ID. Cross, the ID. Tiguan will go on sale in 2027 as a “True Volkswagen,” bringing a new look, updated tech, and a refined interior.

“The all-electric model builds on the strengths of the bestseller and offers premium design, generous space, intuitive operation, and innovative technologies,” Volkswagen Brand CEO Thomas Shafer said.

In the past year, Volkswagen delivered over 1 million Tiguan and Tayron models globally. Both are available in petrol, diesel, and plug-in hybrid (PHEV), so adding an all-electric option makes sense.

The ID. Tiguan will go on sale in early 2027, starting in Europe, replacing the ID.4 and ID.5 in Volkswagen’s lineup. The US and other global markets will follow shortly after.

Although it’s still covered, the new images confirm the changes we’ve seen in recent spy images. The ID. Tiguan will adopt a boxier, more traditional SUV-like design that’s nearly identical to the gas-powered version.

You can see the prototype has pop-out door handles, replacing the flush style used on the ID.4 and ID.5.

Volkswagen didn’t reveal any interior images, but the ID. Tiguan is expected to feature Volkswagen’s new interior design. Like the ID. Polo and ID. Cross (shown below), it will likely include VW’s new infotainment system, including the return of physical buttons.

We will have to wait until closer to launch for specifics, but with VW’s recent battery and drivetrain updates, the ID. Tiguan is expected to offer improved range, faster charging, and better cold-weather performance.

The current ID.4 uses an 82 kWh battery that provides an EPA-estimated range of up to 291 miles in the RWD version. The AWD model offers around 263 miles. Under WLTP conditions, the 2026 VW ID.4 has a range of up to 351 miles (566 km).

Volkswagen said the ID. Tiguan will make its official debut in “early October,” but didn’t reveal a specific date. We should learn more soon. Check back for the latest.
