Next-Generation London Plug-In Black Cab Confirmed for 2027 Production

As befits the capital of Cool Britannia, London has become a showplace for transport electrification. Electric buses, delivery vans and passenger cars ply the streets, and seemingly every little lane sports unobtrusive curbside EV chargers.

London’s iconic black cabs started plugging in in 2018. Since then, the London Electric Vehicle Company (LEVC) has sold over 12,000 of its TX taxis worldwide. On my last visit to London in the summer of 2026, my unscientific survey found that at least half the cabs I saw were plug-in models.

LEVC’s TX “range-extended electric taxi” (technically a plug-in hybrid) features the company’s proprietary eCity powertrain. Now the company has confirmed that a next-generation plug-in black cab will launch in the UK market in the second half of 2027. The new model has been designed from the ground up to meet the Metropolitan Conditions of Fitness set out by Transport for London.

LEVC’s history began in 1908 when the first black cab was specially designed and commissioned for use in London. The company introduced the plug-in TX in 2018. Chinese auto firm Geely Group has invested some £1 billion in LEVC since 2013.

LEVC has revealed a series of early design sketches, but technical details and specifications remain under wraps. The company has completed the assembly of a prototype TX model, and is preparing its production facility in Ansty, Warwickshire, for the start of new vehicle production in 2027.
