Bay Area Air District Approves Nation's Strictest Clean Water Heater Standards, Phasing Out Gas Units
The Bay Area Air District voted to adopt the strongest clean appliance standards in the U.S., requiring households to replace gas water heaters with zero-emission heat pump alternatives as old units fail starting in 2028. Officials estimate the rules could prevent up to 85 premature deaths and 15,000 asthma attacks annually while saving families roughly $360 per year.
