NHTSA opens probe into comma.ai's openpilot after 5 crashes killed 3

NHTSA has opened a formal Preliminary Evaluation into comma.ai's aftermarket driver assistance hardware and openpilot software following five crashes involving stopped or slow-moving vehicles in-lane, three of them fatal. The probe covers roughly 30,000 comma three, 3X, and four devices, making it the startup's most serious regulatory challenge since 2016.
