Limes Reaches Ready-to-Build Stage for 200MW/1GWh BESS Project in Chile

The project is part of a growing pipeline that includes two other BESS and a solar-plus-storage venture in the country.
Italian clean energy developer Limes Renewable Energy has reached the ready-to-build stage at its 200MW/1GWh Huañil project.
The project is located in the Coquimbo region, just north of the capital Santiago, and is the company’s largest battery energy storage system (BESS) in Chile. The project and joins a portfolio that includes two other BESS, currently in development with a combined power of 350MW, and the Pradera Larga solar-plus-storage project, which aims to pair 84MW of solar PV capacity with 90MW of BESS.
The Huañil project is also the company’s first to reach the RTB stage outside of Italy, and Limes said that the Pradera Larga project, and one standalone BESS in Chile, would advance towards the RTB stage “in the coming months”.
“Bringing our first Chilean project to RTB is a defining moment for us in the region, and one that reflects years of disciplined groundwork,” said Limes head of LATAM Martin Libra. “With our pipeline maturing and two more projects moving towards RTB, we’re well positioned to advance the strategic partnerships that will define our next phase of growth in Chile.”
Chile has seen a number of significant project developments already this year, led by the inauguration of a 3.5GWh component of Grenergy’s Oasis de Atacama solar-plus-storage project. Commissioned in phases, the project was initially planned to have 11GWh of BESS, and this goal has since been expanded to 14GWh.
Other project news includes ContourGlobal starting construction at a 90MW/360MWh BESS project, to be paired with a 131MW solar PV project, and Verano Energy selecting Sungrow to supply BESS to its 152MW/606MWh Observatorio project in O’Higgins, central Chile.
The news follows a number of project advancements for Limes, such as the securing of environmental approvals for three projects, including Huañil, since last November. The company is also active in the renewable energy generation sector, and last summer sold a 287MW portfolio of solar PV and wind asses to an unnamed independent power producer (IPP).
