Solar Industry Warns New U.S. Tariffs on Polysilicon Will Raise Costs, Hinder Manufacturing

WASHINGTON D.C. — Today the Trump administration is imposing new tariffs and establishing minimum import prices on polysilicon and polysilicon derivative products including ingots, wafer, solar cells, and modules.

Following is a statement from Tim Pawlenty, CEO of the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA):

“America has made terrific progress rebuilding its solar manufacturing base, but imposing tariffs and prices floors on solar materials will create new challenges for American manufacturers and raise energy costs for families and businesses. We appreciate the domestic manufacturing incentives being included in the Proclamation and hope they’ll help offset these challenges.”

SEIA, the American Council on Renewable Energy, and the American Clean Power Association collectively filed comments on the 232 Polysilicon investigation, in which the organizations provided recommendations for alternative solutions for growing domestic polysilicon manufacturing.
