Zoox Wins First US Approval for Driverless Paid Robotaxis — No Steering Wheel or Pedals

Zoox has secured the first U.S. federal approval to operate paid robotaxis without human controls like steering wheels or pedals, though limited to 2,500 vehicles annually and pending state approvals. This marks a historic step beyond Waymo’s modified consumer cars, but comes with strict reporting requirements and no vehicle sales, leaving room for future expansion if safety holds. The approval signals a new competitive phase, challenging Waymo and possibly Tesla to follow.
