TUAL’s PowerUp battery-integrated charging technology keeps mission-critical commercial EVs rolling in the UK

Summary

TUAL has deployed its PowerUp Charger, which combines integrated battery storage with high-power DC charging, at three SP Energy Networks locations following a successful Middlewich pilot. The battery-buffered design helps commercial fleets overcome grid constraints and supports 30-minute charging windows critical to round-the-clock operations.

TUAL, a developer of charging solutions for commercial EVs, has rolled out its PowerUp Charger technology at three SP Energy Networks sites in the UK, following a successful pilot at Middlewich in Cheshire.

SP Energy Networks, operator of a regional electrical transmission and distribution network, will use TUAL’s battery-buffered PowerUp Charger technology at locations in Middlewich, Liverpool, and Cambuslang near Glasgow to support electrification of fleet vehicles in locations where conventional charging could be constrained.

TUAL’s PowerUp Charger combines integrated battery energy storage with high-power DC charging, drawing and storing energy from available grid supply and delivering energy to vehicles when required. The system enables operators to get around grid constraints, making it faster and easier to deploy DC fast charging capability.

For SP Energy Networks, operational requirements require charging sessions to fit into 30-minute dwell periods during breaks and re-stock visits. The company found that TUAL’s PowerUp Charger provides the perfect solution for the three sites, offering reduced civil engineering requirements and the flexibility to be moved quickly if site requirements change.

Philip Clarke, founder and CEO at TUAL, said: “PowerUp offers a pathway to making critical fleet electrification a reality now. Operators such as SP Energy Networks need charging solutions that work within the realities of their sites, their vehicle utilisation and their operational responsibilities. PowerUp delivers ultra-rapid DC charging capability at sites where conventional charging is constrained by infrastructure capacity, lease structures, civil works or redevelopment timelines.”

SP Energy Networks’ Phil Jones said: “Our teams work around the clock to keep power flowing and the lights on, 24/7 and 365 days a year, so it’s vital that our electric fleet is ready to go at a moment’s notice. The trial in Middlewich showed that TUAL’s PowerUp Charger can be deployed quickly, deliver the DC charging capability we need and support operational resilience thanks to the built-in battery—with the added bonus of the flexibility to be easily relocated if needed to meet our site needs. It was a no-brainer to build on the success of our trial by rolling out this innovative technology to these three key locations.”
