  • CATL continued to lead China's power battery market but lost market share, while BYD gained ground.
  • CATL and BYD together accounted for 62.43% of the market, up from 61.56% in July.

CATL (HKEX: 3750) continued to dominate China's electric vehicle (EV) battery market last month, but its share declined further as BYD (HKEX: 1211) narrowed the gap with the industry leader.

CATL's domestic power battery installations totaled 32.54 GWh in August, ranking first with a 41.45% market share, according to data released Tuesday by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA).

The company's installations rose about 3.6% from July's 31.40 GWh, but its share fell from 42.33% as growth lagged the broader market.

China's power battery installations reached 79.0 GWh in August, up 26.3% year-on-year and 5.9% from July, marking the highest monthly total this year, according to CABIA.

BYD remained second with 16.47 GWh of installations, up about 15.5% from July. Its market share rose 1.75 percentage points to 20.98%.

The gap between the 2 companies narrowed to 20.47 percentage points, shrinking for the third consecutive month. Together, they accounted for 62.43% of the market, up from 61.56% in July.

CALB (HKEX: 3931) remained third with 5.11 GWh of installations and a 6.51% share, though both figures declined from July.

Eve Energy (SZSE: 300014) overtook Gotion High-tech (SZSE: 002074) to rank fourth with 4.67 GWh, despite its share slipping 0.10 percentage points to 5.95%.

Gotion High-tech fell to fifth with 4.61 GWh and a 5.87% share. The top 5 manufacturers together held 80.76% of the market, slightly below July's 80.85%.

Rept Battero Energy (HKEX: 666) ranked sixth with a 3.47% share, narrowly ahead of Sunwoda (SZSE: 300207) at 3.46%. Their installations totaled 2.72 GWh and 2.71 GWh, respectively.

Zenergy, Energee and Svolt Energy ranked eighth through tenth, with shares of 2.39%, 2.30% and 2.29%, respectively.

LG Energy Solution remained eleventh in the overall market, but its installations rose to 1.60 GWh from 0.73 GWh in July. Its share increased 1.05 percentage points to 2.03%.

In the ternary power battery market, CATL retained its lead with 7.4 GWh of installations and a 66.80% share, down sharply from July's 75.81%.

LG Energy Solution regained second place with 1.6 GWh and a 14.50% share, overtaking Svolt Energy, which ranked third with 7.70%.

Sunwoda and CALB ranked fourth and fifth in the ternary segment, with shares of 5.20% and 4.30%, respectively.

Ternary batteries continued to lose ground in China's power battery market. Installations fell 1.0% from July to 11.0 GWh in August, declining for the third consecutive month and accounting for 14.0% of total installations.

By contrast, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery installations rose 7.0% from July to 67.6 GWh. Their share climbed to 85.6%, setting a record for the third consecutive month.

CATL remained first in the LFP segment with 25.17 GWh of installations, as its share rose 0.88 percentage points to 37.31%.

BYD held second place with 16.47 GWh, gaining 1.79 percentage points to 24.41%. All of its domestic installations continued to be LFP batteries.

The gap between the 2 companies' LFP market shares narrowed to 12.90 percentage points from 13.81 percentage points in July, extending the trend.

Eve Energy climbed to third in the LFP market with 4.67 GWh of installations and a 6.92% share, overtaking CALB and Gotion High-tech.

CALB ranked fourth with 4.63 GWh and a 6.87% share, while Gotion High-tech ranked fifth with 4.58 GWh and 6.78%.
